Julien McHardy is undertaking an ESRC funded doctoral study in sociology at Lancaster University and the design and innovation centre Imagination Lancaster in cooperation with the design company IDEO. His PhD investigates if concepts from practice theory and science and technology studies can inform a move beyond the single user and behaviour paradigms towards a more systemic understanding of design regarding sustainability. More precisely he is interested in questions of how diversity can be accomodated in the process of making something specific. Julien worked with blind people and as a boat builder in Hamburg before he studied product design at the Bauhaus University Weimar and completed his Master of Research at the Glasgow School of Art.
